Historic Indian Bronze 9 Pdr. Howitzer And Ammunition Limber from the Orderly Battery of His Highness the Maharaja Runjit Singh. This splendid howitzer was made in the early 19th century to the order of Runjit Singh, who raised the Sikh nation to be a vary dominate power. His artillery was of the finest quality, and deployment of French and Italian mercenaries using European tactics ensured that this was the most effective force ever to have taken to the field in India.

This Howitzer and Limber were captured by General sir Hugh Gough, the commander in Chief of the British Forces in India, during the Sutlej river Campaign of 1845-6. It is highly probable that it is the one actually captured at the Battle of Aliwal on the 28th January 1846 and described in the “Return of Ordance Captured from the Enemy” as follows “One copper 9 Pdr. (Howitzer) 3’ 11” long, highly ornamented, carriage inlaid with brass and steel, serviceable”. The quality of the cast and chased copper bronze barrel, the teak carriage mounted with its ornate brass and steel fittings, ranks this piece of ordnance as one of the finest of its kind, It is complete with brass mounted accoutrements for servicing and firing the gun, including two ramrods and sponges.

The Howitzer was brought back to this country as the personal property of General Sir Hugh Gough and was retained at his family seat, Lough Coutra in Ireland, until recent times.

Has been inside at all times. It is in perfect condition.

It is now on the east cost of the US. The private owner has final say regarding final sale.
